I know many readers don't mind historical inaccuracies because it IS technically fiction, and I think this book will resonate with them, but it's not for me. Just based off of the synopsis,...How disappointing! Just based off of the synopsis, this one sounds so promising. But I'm the same as you--if I don't know a lot about a historical period (or even if I do), I like to read historical fiction because (let's be real) who wouldn't rather read an exciting take on history than a dry non-fiction account? You hit the nail on the head, though--it has to be historically accurate for it to work! It sounds like this will be a pass for me.
