Small News: Hurricane aftermath

I don't usually post many personal details here, but since I did mention being away because of the hurricane, and then I was away for a while, I think it's only fair to give a little update as to what's been going on in my world.

Again, it's VERY good timing that we moved to Texas this year, because otherwise things would not be good for us. As it is, the house we lived in, where my in-laws still live, is in pretty bad shape and their car has been totaled. The first floor was flooded enough to ruin almost everything there, including all the appliances, furniture, walls, and floors, as well as a number of sentimental items.

Almost as saddening is the state of my library! It is currently closed and though it will reopen at some point, there is no definite date at this time. There was flooding and we're not sure yet which, if any, books can be salvaged. My little branch was on higher ground and fared far better than the main branch and the other small branch though, so there is hope!

My library is a part of a great community that has come together to help take care of one another, so I have faith that we will rebuild to be even better than before. I'm  making sure to record all the fantastic new books coming out so that when we do re-open I can bolster the spirits of my teen and tween readers with gorgeous paranormal guys and epic quests, because, seriously, those things make everything better.

Thanks for hanging in there with me during this and all the other hiatuses this year! Reviews are coming soon!

  1. OH. MY. GOD! I didn't even think about all the books that must have been destroyed in the hurricane, but now that you've brought it to my mind, I'm horrified. Horrified! How awful!

  2. OH, I'm totally depressed just thinking about all that bookish damage. AND YOUR OLD HOUSE. I can't even imagine. I forget just how damaging this hurricane was for some people, and this is a real bummer. I hope your family has an okay time of things, despite what's happened.

  4. First glad no one was hurt, second my parents having lost twice to Hurricanes when I was a child in late 60's know that it is really devastating as those precious family mementos are what just cannot be replaced. Hang in there and if there is a way to help out you library for sure keep us updated.

  6. *hugs* I'm glad you and your family are okay, even if the house didn't fare so good. Hopefully things will be sorted out.

And I'm sad to hear about the library, you always said such awesomely good things about it! But hopefully it will reopen soon.

  7. Oh my gosh, thank you all! You're bringing tears to my eyes with all of your kind words and offers to help! There is nothing set up yet for book donations since they're still sorting through everything, but I will for sure let you know when I know more. I'm sure donations would be very welcome.

I'm just so touched by these comments. I hope you don't mind that I pass them along to my patrons and co-workers. Your kindness is heartening :)

  9. It's going to be a long time I fear before we've all recuperated. We were hit really bad on the Jersey Shore as well...Thankfully we personally had no major damage but only suffered a week with no power, heat, hot water etc.

*Hugs* Glad everyone is safe at least desoite the damage.

  11. Small, this is so very, very sad! I'm so sorry for you and your family's losses. I truly hope you are able to regroup and rebuild very, very soon. When you say "My Library" do you mean that in the sense that it was the library you worked at before you moved OR do you mean it more like you owned that library? Either way, its horrific, I totally hope the books weren't all destroyed and it will be able to reopen soon. I know you will help stock it with some incredible books. You've really steered me into some fantastic reads I would have missed otherwise.

Thinking of you and yours especially missing your blog posts. Hope all gets better soon.

  14. Aw, thank you all so much!

Gina, it's the library where I worked. I still order books for them and I'm very attached to it and the patrons so I call it "my" library. I also worked there for so long that the collection felt like it was literally mine! And, actually, a bunch of them were my books that I donated. It was sad leaving behind all those books.

It's all about friendly conversation here at Small Review :) I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Be sure to check back again because I do make every effort to reply to your comments here.

Because I am absolutely terrible about following through with blog awards, I can't in good conscience accept any more. Thank you very much for thinking of me though!
