Soon after, I did read the book and proceeded to kick myself repeatedly for having waited so long. I'm now a full on Juliet Marillier convert and I squeaked out loud when I saw her latest book available on NetGalley.

It's a fantasy set in a Tsarist-Russia-like fictional land and it's chock full of court intrigue, swoony guys, kickbutt ladies, action, questing, and a scene that is SO awesomely scary. I've read it, I've hugged it, I've reread my favorite parts, and I've placed it firmly on my Special Shelf!

I hate this cover, but I'm really digging the blurb! The year is 1590 and Gabriella practices medicine under the guidance of her father. But, when her father goes missing, her position as a doctor becomes shaky (and, um, I imagine she's worried about where he went... right?) so she sets out to find him.

Lucky for her, he left clues! Lucky for me, most of these clues are within old letters (I love books with clue-filled old letters!) This leads her on a quest all over Europe as she pieces together these hints and hopefully discovers something utterly shocking. I can't wait to find out!

I loved Robin Mellom's YA debut Ditched enough to auto-read whatever she writes next, and that appears to be a MG comedy! I'm really looking forward to reading more of Robin's humor. Even better, The Classroom stars a boy narrator!

There's also a "proud neurotic, in a color-coding sort of way," which, as a proud color-coding neurotic myself, pretty much seals the deal for me.

I was pretty resistant to this book for a while. Why? I don't know. It just felt...ok, I'll admit my complete and utter shallowness and say out loud that my brain went "Meh" as soon as I realized this was a book about the bonds of friendship between two women.

Where's the swoon in that?!

Also, I'm kinda WWII-ed out. I'm totally into historical fiction...right up until around the 1920s, and then my yawns start kicking in (which makes little sense since I'm all over historical NON-fiction about 1920s+).

BUT, have you seen the early reviews coming in about this book?! Holy moly they make it sound like Something Special, and I don't want to miss out on that.

I love books like this! The idea of being trapped in a superstore and having to defend my fort and fight for survival is sort of a fantasy of mine (in that I don't actually want this to happen but it's really cool to imagine sort of way).

But...eh, these books almost always wimp out and become unrealistically tame. So I have to remind myself to stay cautious and don't get too excited. (Like that ever works.)

I like my mermaid stories to be uplifting and fun with sparkles and singing crabs, but Monstrous Beauty doesn't look very light-hearted, does it? It looks more like the luring sailors to their deaths via crashing waves and jagged rocks kind of mermaid tale. So why did I request it from NetGalley?

BECAUSE IT'S GOTHIC FICTION! Or at least it sure sounds like it fits the genre. A generational curse, strange deaths, family secrets, unraveling historical mysteries, romance, oh my!

This book has the distinction of being the first book I bought in Austin! (or, more accurately, Round Rock). I finished the book I brought with me, and while I had loaded up my computer with a bunch of galleys, I wanted an actual physical book to read when I wasn't sitting in my hotel room.

I went to The Book Spot, which is awesome (she has dogs in there!) and restrained myself (mostly) in the face of a TON of tempting books. I ended up picking Graceling because 1) It was on sale!, 2) I've been meaning to read it for forever, and 3) It was long and a standalone so I figured it would hold me for a while and wouldn't leave me ripping out my hair to find out what would happen next. Mission accomplished on all counts and review to come.

I've heard this is about an angel in training, but he's not your typical angel and this is not your typical angel book. My main draw to Griffin Rising is the mentor relationship between Griffin and Basil. It sounds sweet, and I like the idea of the central relationship focusing on friendship instead of romance. Reviews from Musings of a YA Reader and Supernatural Snark convinced me to accept this for review.

This is an ARC and I'm pretty sure, though not positive, that I got it after filling out a form in Shelf Awareness (a daily newsletter about the publishing world). The thing about Shelf Awareness is that I fill out the offers, but then I forget which books I put my name in for!

After the Snow takes place during a future ice age and, I think, may fall into the post-apocalyptic/survival genre. It sounds like maybe there's a touch of dystopian in there, too? Basically a boy discovers that his family was taken away by "the trucks" and he needs to trek across the snow-covered wilderness to save them. I love survival stories when they make sense and are realistic! Hopefully After the Snow fits the bill!

I ordered it to skim through the beginning because I own the last book in the series and I wanted to see if I liked the first book enough to bother hanging onto the one I own. I was sort of meh about her standalone book Fateful, but I liked it enough that I'm at least a little curious about this series.

But...I've heard it's a boarding school book (good!) with a lot of insta-love and "I can't live without you, you're my soulmate" monopolizing the plot (not so good). So, what do you think? Given my taste in books, do you think this series is for me?

I am also going to go on the record here and proclaim these among my absolute most disliked covers ever.

Somehow the end of the world also ties into the plot, the countdown clock, and Ben...but I don't really understand how just yet. Guess I'll have to read the book to find out! I love books with mysteries, and given the thickness of this one, I'm hoping there are a TON of threads to unravel (oh! Totally didn't realize that. Ha, get it?)

I won this from Sally at Always Lost in Stories as part of her blogoversary giveaway. Thank you! I was SO excited to see that she sent the UK version, because I am about fifty million times more in love with the shimmery UK cover than the bleh US cover. Double yay!

I've heard so many wonderful things about this book, but I have to admit that I've been scared by the hype. I'm glad I won a copy though, because now I can see for myself. I've heard it involved a war between...angels and demons? Or creatures like them? There's also a romance, and I can't say no to romance.

What actually makes me most excited is what I've heard about the "story within a story." Readers seem to be mixed on it. The plot detours for a significant chunk into a myth that provides background for the main story. Or so I've heard. I LOVE when authors do this, so I'm really looking forward to this part!

Bookish Hobbit reviewed it a few weeks ago and was mixed on it, so she offered to send me her copy. Of course I greedily accepted. Thank you!

The Hero's Guide to Saving Your Kingdom by Christopher Healy

I first heard about this book from Heather at Buried in Books, who alerted me because she knows how much I adore fractured fairy tales! This fractured tale tackles Prince Charming in ways you've never imagined. I peeked at the first chapter and was already laughing out loud. I can't wait to dive in!

This book is published by Walden Pond Press (an imprint of HarperCollins), so when I received an email request about reviewing The Fourth Stall Part II (another WPP book and SO good!), I inquired about The Hero's Guide to Saving Your Kingdom. Wonderfully, it appeared in my mailbox as a Happy New Year gift!

Joan Holub asked if I would be interested in reviewing the latest Goddess Girls books, and I jumped at the chance! I adore these books...that is, when I can actually get my hands on a copy! They're in constant circulation with my library girls. The squees on Goddess Girls release days are EPIC. They are MG books, but I highly recommend them to all fans of Greek myth retellings!

A Breath of Eyre by Eve Marie Mont

Eve stopped by Small Review during the Historical Fantasy Jubilee and I've been dying to read her book ever since! (Seriously, getting sucked into the pages of Jane Eyre AND there's a cute guy with a haunted past?? SIGN ME UP!) We spoke again recently about setting up something fun for release day and Eve sent me an ARC and some swag. You'll find out more about that fun in March!


Freshman Year and Other Unnatural Disasters by Meredith Zeitlin

I received an email asking if I would be interested in reviewing this book and, after reading the blurb and watching the video trailer, I was totally hooked! I know I don't often read contemporary, but I have a soft spot for contemporary underdog books with a funny twist, so Freshman Year and Other Unnatural Disasters sounds perfect.


Fetching by Kiera Stewart

I first received a copy of this through NetGalley, but it expired before I got a chance to download it. I was totally bummed, so I emailed the publisher through NetGalley and asked if there was any chance of reading it even though it had been archived. The contact was super sweet and offered to send a finished copy for review.

Fetching arrived a few days ago and after peeking at the first chapter, I am 100% hooked. I'm SO on Olivia's side and I cannot wait to see her get revenge on the mean girls in her school. Plus, behaviorism! I'm super curious to see how Kiera Stewart integrates one of my favorite schools of psychology.

I said this last IMM, but I'll repeat it again for any newbies who might be participating in Busting the Newbie Blues (are you not participating yet? Come join the fun!).

Whenever I see people's mailboxes and I look at what they got for review, I'm always curious HOW they got them, especially since I feel sorta like I'm stumbling around in the dark without a map when it comes to acquiring review books. Did they ask for them? Did the books magically appear on their doorstep? Are they e-books? HOW DO I GET THEM???

Ahem, so in case anyone else is wondering the same things, I am going to write how I received each review book. Hopefully this will help clear up some of the mystery surrounding the sometimes seemingly mystical appearance of review books.

Please note: I am NOT offering advice on how you should go about getting review books. I'm only sharing what I did. Really, I'm so far from knowing what I'm doing that I can't give advice.

This book appeared unexpectedly, but I'm pretty sure I got it because I filled out a request through an ad in Shelf Awareness. I'm iffy on it because I'm sort of freaked out by the idea of cyborgs and androids and similarly mechanical people.

But, I have read many good reviews and I DO harbor strong positive feelings for Star Trek's Data (though not The Borg--they hurt Picard! You do NOT hurt Picard!), so I'm wary but game. The cover totally grosses me out though. How do you make feet more puke-inducing? Stick creepy mechanical parts in them!

 

New Girl by Paige Harbison

This is a retelling of Daphne du Maurier's amazing book Rebecca. I first heard about New Girl after reading Melissa from One Librarian's Book Reviews' EPIC list of classic retellings (posted for the Classic Double Challenge she's hosting). 

I am a gigantic hand-waving fan of Rebecca so I jumped all over New Girl when I saw it offered on NetGalley (look for it under HarlequinTeen). I've since read it and I am impressed. Fans of Rebecca and Adele Griffin's Tighter will probably want to check it out.

I don't have a photo, but I also won a TON of bookmarks from Splash of Our Worlds. Thank you! Most of the bookmarks are in Greek, so I'm not really sure what they say, but that's half the fun! The biggest hits have been Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Eclipse in Greek.

Shadowcry by Jenna Burtenshaw

I read the first chapter and LOVED it, but then I decided to return it to the library. Crazy right? But there is a method to my madness. Shadowcry is the first book in a series...a series that isn't published in full yet in the US. I get the feeling that I am going to love this series (maybe even Special Shelf it?), so I'm going to wait until all of the books are available. 

Legend by Marie Lu

I wish I had waited until the rest of this series was published! I am so completely in love with Legend that I'm having a hard time cobbling together a review that isn't a total gush-fest of OMGLOVELOVELOVE. 

Becoming Marie Antoinette by Juliet Grey

This is an adult book, but I don't think there was anything too inappropriate for YA readers (except for the whole problems with consummating their marriage thing). I liked it a lot, but it's definitely Historical fiction with a capital H.

Poison by Sara Poole

This is another adult book, and this one IS more adult (but not overly smutty). It's about the Borgias, a plot to kill a pope, and the poisoner's daughter caught in the middle. I liked it, but it wasn't GREAT like I was hoping it would be. Still...

The Borgia Betrayal by Sara Poole

...I liked Poison enough to order the next book from the library. Now I just have to find the time to read it!

The Iron Knight by Julie Kagawa

I've been meaning to read this book for SO long (ever since my frantically fangirling review of The Iron Queen), but I just never seemed to have the time. Now I got it through the library. Hopefully with a due date looming, I'll finally pick it up.  

Liar's Moon by Elizabeth C. Bunce

I ADORED the first book StarCrossed and I've been dying to read Liar's Moon ever since (even though it didn't even end on a cliffhanger)! I can't wait to dive into Digger's story again.

The Bad Queen by Carolyn Meyer

I read Cleopatra Confesses by Carolyn Meyer and I enjoyed it a lot (except for the fact that it ended before all the good stuff really happened), so I've been wanting to read another one of her historicals ever since. I picked well with The Bad Queen. I loved it!
