Books I got (9)

For Review

Shadow Breaker
by Daniel Blythe

All I really needed to read was,"An electrifying paranormal thriller that will have readers guessing till the end!"because I am totally up for that! I haven't heard much buzz about this title yet, and I'm not sure where it falls on the MG/YA continuum, but I have high hopes that all that swirly magic looking stuff and scared expression on the MC, combined with "action pose" means Shadow Breaker will be a lot of fun.

Requested and received from Scholastic.

by Maya Gold

Witches! I loves stories about witches discovering their powers. There's a lot of room for funny mistakes as the MC learns how to harness their new powers, and it sounds like Maya Gold is going to capitalize on that potential (love spell? When do those ever go as planned?)

Plus, a blonde witch learning how to use her witchy powers never fails to make me think of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and that's always a good thing.

Requested and received from Scholastic.

The Runaway King
by Jennifer A. Nielsen

Ok, so clearly I loved the first book, so is it any wonder I'd do just about anything to get my hands on a copy of the sequel? Lucky for me, Scholastic didn't require any of the high stakes bribes I was totally ready to offer. And even though I'm a little scared to read it (this IS a sequel, after all), I'm pretty confident Jennifer A. Nielsen won't let me down.

Requested and received from Scholastic.

The Fourth Stall Part III
by Chris Rylander

The Mob meets middle grade in this hilarious series that never fails to disappoint. I'm glad to see Chris Rylander extending the series, and given the self-contained nature of each installment, I hope he continues writing many more.

Pitched and received from publisher.

Pandora the Curious
by Joan Holub and Suzanne Williams

Goddess Girls! This is the first book about Pandora and I can't wait to see things from her perspective. She's a peripheral character, and while not as personally interesting to me as Medusa, I do love getting to see a story from a different point of view. I'm also really looking forward to seeing what hijinks happen after she opens the box!

Pitched and received from author.

Zeus and the Thunderbolt of Doom
Poseidon and the Sea of Fury
by Joan Holub and Suzanne Williams

I've been waiting for this series for so long! Pitched to a slightly younger audience than Goddess Girls and seemingly attractive to both boys and girls, I have super high hopes for these books!

Pitched and received from author.

Crimson Frost
by Jennifer Estep

I consider this series my comfort read. It makes me happy and I love spending time with Gwen and her friends. The events at the end of the last book really kicked things up a notch in the peril and sadness department, and I hope things get better for Gwen in Crimson Frost

Pitched and received from author and publisher.

Finn Finnegan
by Darby Karchut

I liked Darby's Griffin Rising enough to want to check out what else she had to offer. Her upcoming Finn Finnegan sounded super appealing with its mentor/student relationship (Darby writes these wonderfully) and it's MC with attitude (love guys like that!). Lucky for me, I now have a copy to review!

Pitched and received from author.

Scent of Magic
by Maria V. Snyder

I adored the first book Touch of Power so, so much and I've been counting down the days until I could get my hands on a copy of the sequel. That journey was anything but smooth.

I mostly wrote off the idea of requesting an ARC because, well, because I'm shy! So I figured I'd track it down when it came into the library. BUT, then I saw it on NetGalley! But then I saw it was the UK version and I am not a UK resident. But I figured, well, why not just try requesting? I'm getting more ok with the idea of rejection anyway.

But I wasn't rejected! After making awkward noises of surprise and excitement upon opening the approval email, I quickly clicked over to NetGalley so I could drop everything and start reading. Except, there was only a Kindle button. And I don't have a Kindle. Fighting back tears (ok, not literally, but close!) and mustering up my courage, I sent an email to the publisher asking if there was another format available. And I heard nothing back.

I had pretty much given up on the idea of getting to read this book anytime soon when I decided to check the NetGalley page just one more time. SUCCESS!! There was an Adobe Digital Editions button this time!

Now, here's hoping the book is filled with as much adventure and emotional turmoil as the process of acquiring the book.

Requested and received from the publisher, via NetGalley.

Bourne and Tributary
by Lisa T. Bergren

Even though I already have both of these in e-book format, I'm a paper-copy girl. When I saw Lisa was releasing these together in hard copy, I knew I had to buy it. Added bonus? I'm blurbed on the back!!! (Another bonus? BOTH guys look fantastic).

What did you get this week? Are you interested in reading any of these books? What did you think of them if you've read them already?

  1. I liked Scent of Magic although not as much as the first book (I like Avry and Kerrick TOGETHER!)

Your post just reminded me that I need to get The False Prince on my "Missed in 2012; Read in 2013" list. I think the book sounds so awesome and I want to get caught up before the second book releases.

    1. Hm, I've read Scent of Magic now and I didn't love it nearly as much as the first book. I do like them together too :( But I didn't mind them apart. It was ok. I didn't like how Mary Sue-ish Avery was though.

Oh yes! You should definitely check out The False Prince. I hope you love it :)

  2. I got my Pandora a few days ago too! I'm so excited to read it!!!!
And The Fourth Stall, I so need to get those for my sister. She's a huge Godfather fan. :D

I hope you enjoy your booksies, Smallsie :D

    1. Me too!! I'm convinced Joan and Suzanne can write nothing but fantastically adorable books.

Oh my gosh, if your sister loves The Godfather, then she definitely needs to check out The Fourth Stall. They're so good.

      Thanks! <3 :D

    2. My sister LOOVES the Godfather. She named our dog Rocco after Rocco Lampone! I actually bought the first book yesterday :D

  3. I've heard so much about Jennifer Nielsen's series. That and Jennifer Estep's series. If the Mythos Academy series is your comfort read, maybe it's time for me to get moving on it! Also didn't know Lisa Bergren had released another story set in that world. Interesting. Looking forward to reading your thoughts on these books. Enjoy them :)!!

    1. Oh gosh, you need to read those books ASAP!!! Or, you know, no pressure :P They're just really good :)

  4. Shadow Breakers looks awesome!

I'm getting two of the Goddess Girls books soon, I can't wait to start reading them. I can still remember a review you wrote for one of them, you made them sound so amazing (:

    Hope you enjoy your books,
    Celine ~ Nyx Book Reviews

    1. Doesn't Shadow Breakers look cool? I haven't heard much about it, but I have high hopes. Aw, that is so nice to hear about the GG books and my review! Thank you :) I hope you enjoy them. They're very cute and consistently good.

  5. You were blurbed?!?!?! Of course you had to have a hard copy, then! OF COURSE YOU DID. No question.

Oh, I read the first Fourth Stall book aloud to my class. They loved it! They've been begging me to read the second book, but I am EVIL. I told them I would get it for the classroom, in case they want to read it themselves, but I wouldn't be reading it aloud.

I also bought a boxed set of the Goddess Girls books from a Scholastic book club and one of my seven-year-old girls is devouring them. I even caught her trying to sneak one home in her backpack! I can really respect a student who loves books enough to steal them. All the same, I told her she can borrow books whenever she long as she asks first.

    1. :D Your comment is filled with so much win! Can you record yourself reading The Fourth Stall? I want to hear if you did the voices. :P Did you tell them there is a part 3? I'm so happy they loved it.

And YAYAYAYAYAY for Goddess Girls and stealthy readers absconding with copies!!

  6. Oh my got the new Jennifer Nielsen book? I should email Scholastic to see if I can get it.

    1. You totally should! I have my fingers crossed for you :D

  7. I may have to buy the Bourne/Tributary hard copy too. My other shelf copies are lonely without it! :) Lots of great books here, Small!

    1. You MUST buy it, because you are blurbed on it too! And your blurb is all prominent at the top.

Only downside: The book is just a tiny bit smaller than the others, thus ruining the perfect symmetry of the series on the shelf. Also, it's glossier than the others.

  8. Oh, you lucky dove! The Runaway King! You have it?! *SQUEEEE*

And it was thanks to you that I started reading the Mythos series and it's as adorable as you've made it sound! I can't wait to read my copy of Crimson Frost as well. IT JUST SOUNDS SO AWESOME AND EPIC AND AHHHH.

Dude, I've read Scent of Magic and WOW. It's not AS amazing as the first one, but it's still pretty awesome and I just cannot wait til the third one!

Also, I *DIE*. You have Bourne/Tributary! I neeeeeeed to get a paperback to complete my collection of this amazebeans series. So jealous.

    1. Yes! I was SO worried it had gotten destroyed in the hurricane, and I think it did too because our post office was condemned and everything in it was ruined. And if they had already dropped off the package on our doorstep, well, that would have been completely washed away. So I had to ask for a second copy and pray they still had copies to send. My fingers were cramping they were so tightly crossed.

I LOVE hearing that about the Mythos Academy series! I think you're going to really love Crimson Frost. I hesitate to say this, because really all the books were great, but this might be my favorite so far.

I agree, I didn't love Scent of Magic as much, but I still liked it.

Yes! I bought Bourne/Tributary for myself because I HAD to own a hard copy. It's much easier to lend to friends that way :)

  9. I'm so looking forward to The Runaway King. Enjoy your new books!

    1. Me too! Thank you! I really hope it lives up to the first book.

  10. You were blurbed? Fabulous! Congrats!

  11. Awesome book, and I can't wait to read your reviews on them!
