Cover Review: Grave Mercy

Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers

Seven reasons you like this cover...

...and why that means you're going to love Grave Mercy

You zeroed in on PRETTY DRESS

It's pretty fabulous, isn't it? It's all flowing and red, and it actually looks like it came from the past and not a prom catalog. Ismae has a few notable scenes where she gets to dress up in pretty dresses I wish I owned.

This dress also has presence, and unlike many "pretty dress" covers, this dress doesn't seem like it will hamper Ismae's ability to use that crossbow.

Ok, so maybe running is out, but Ismae isn't the type to run an hide anyway. Plus, imagine how many weapons she can hide in those folds? And I promise you, she does.

You're tired of damsels in distress

If your interest was piqued at the sight of a female lead toting a giant "Don't Mess With Me" weapon, then you're in for a treat.

Ismae is an assassin, and this point is driven home on multiple occasions. That crossbow? It's only a small part of her arsenal--an arsenal she makes full use of throughout the book.

You want to live in a castle

Come on, be honest, when you looked at that castle, did a tiny part of you cry out, "Mine!"? Or was that just me?

Ismae spends most of the book inside a castle as she tries to figure out which one of the guests is a viper in disguise.

You like historical settings

Doesn't that font scream "historical"? Grave Mercy takes place in medieval France and the historical setting is definitely a presence (though not at all in a boring, overly-detailed way).

You want more than a Barbie

No question, the cover model is pretty. But she's not gorgeous in that "I don't want to stand in a room with you because you're so overwhelmingly beautiful" kinda way either.

And that's Ismae. Her looks don't monopolize anything. As it should be.

You're not going to be bored with the YA cliches of Ismae talking about how plain she looks (while simultaneously attracting the eye of every single male character in the entire book), nor will you be bombarded with reminders of her shinning hair and porcelain skin.

But don't fear, someone will find her attractive...eventually (*hint* *hint* Do you remember what kind of romance I love?)

You're not one to take things lying down

Does this tagline need any more explanation? If you like the sound of it, then I have a feeling Ismae and Duval will be your new best friends.

You know a storm brewing when you see one...and you like it!

Check out those clouds! I don't need to be a meteorologist to figure out that some nasty weather is rolling in. Darkness swirls around Ismae in the story, too, with dastardly plots closing in on her from multiple directions. But see that brightness behind her? See that strong stance and determined look in her eyes? Yep, Ismae is SO going to bring it.

  2. Oh my god! Never heard of this book before but you are right! The cover is beautiful in a way it makes you feel like you will read something totally amazing! The book just got really high in my TBR! I'll risk it from your cover comments and only!

  3. Seriously stop making my TBR list even longer, girl! I wasn't drooling over the castle with a "MINE!" mentality though, I was saving that for the crossbow. (Didn't even notice there was a castle until you pointed it out...) And more weapons to come? Oh, must get my hands on this book.

  9. Mackenzie, It's SO good! I hope it lives up too all your expectations.

Yiota, I hope you like it! I ADORED it.

Bookishhobbit, You know I have no shame in making TBRs longer :) Ismae's actual crossbow is a lot smaller than that one (for handier hiding), but she's pretty awesome with it. There's also a very cool knife, and she's badass with poisons. :D

Evie, I'm so glad you liked my post and I really hope you like the book!

Danya, Yes I have, and it is SO good. I think you're going to love it. I kept thinking of Crown Duel and Poison Study while reading it.

  12. I still need to read my ARC. I want to so badly, but...time!!! This makes me covet it anew! :)

  13. I love the holding of the cross bow. Definitely makes it different from other covers. I don't like the font though - I want something less blocky. And the colors are muted enough that the cover seems to disappear. Even the bright red dress doesn't stand out as much as it would with a better lit background. But maybe I'm wrong.

  14. Ok, you've convinced me. It does look really awesome (seriously, a cross bow?)

  15. I hope she does bring it! Think she'll let me borrow that crossbow? It's pretty sweet! o_o

I hadn't heard of this one until now, but it looks quite fabulous!

  16. This is totally what my prom picture looked like.

  17. Miss Remmers, Thank you! I hope you do read it and love it as much as I do!

Laura, Oooh if you like Yelena and Poison Study, then I definitely think you're going to like Grave Mercy!

A Backwards Story, Argh, I hear you! There are so many good books I have and want to read, but I don't have enough time. Make time for this one though, it's fantastic.

Alison, The crossbow totally makes this one stand out among all the pretty dress covers. You're not wrong! That's how you see it :) I actually like the font, but I've been staring at it for so long now that may be why :P Ismae is very stark and no frills too. It is very overpowering though.

Melissa, Yay! I hope you read it and enjoy it!

Jen, She totally does bring it! I especially like her assortment of poisons :D

Ruby, hahahaaha well, my prom dress was red? My accessories weren't nearly as awesome though.

  18. Hmm, I didn't know I could get such a wide perspective from just one cover. Nice work at showing me reasons why I may want to try this one. You are pretty convincing...

  19. Love the way you set up this cover review! It must have taken you a bit more time to set up than your usual cover reviews, but I know I'm appreciating it!

I do get a bit tired of girls in pretty dresses on covers, but a girl in a dress with a crossbow is just plain awesome. Her expression, too, is very bad ass.

    Love the tagline, too!

  20. Can. Not. Wait.
Love the cover, love the synopsis, love the whole thing!

  21. Have had the opportunity to read the book, am 100 pages from finishing it, and have been telling everyone they MUST read it! Nun assassins spying and killing in midieval Brittany court to save their country from France. A complete page-turner, w/ very strong and interesting female characters, tons adventure, and of course some romance. It's been a very fun journey so far. Can't wait for the rest of the books.

The ARC cover was ok, but this is what we in Library World call a Sexy Cover and it is so much easier to convince teens to read a good book if it has a "sexy" cover. The gown and the crossbow will immediately grab their eyes, and if you tell them "image Buffy as a nun, but going after nobles instead of demons", they'll totally want it.
