Waiting on Wednesday (15) + Giveaway

Button from Bewitched Bookworms.

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine where we all feature upcoming books we're eagerly anticipating.

I've altered things a little to include one book that hasn't come out yet and one but that has already been published but I still haven't gotten around to reading yet.

Entwined by Heather Dixon
Release Date: March 29, 2011
Only one week away!
Publisher: Greenwillow Books
Pages: 480

From Goodreads:

Azalea is trapped. Just when she should feel that everything is before her . . . beautiful gowns, dashing suitors, balls filled with dancing . . . it's taken away. All of it.
The Keeper understands. He's trapped, too, held for centuries within the walls of the palace. And so he extends an invitation.
Every night, Azalea and her eleven sisters may step through the enchanted passage in their room to dance in his silver forest.
But there is a cost.
The Keeper likes to keep things.
Azalea may not realize how tangled she is in his web until it is too late.

I had never really thought much about the fairy tale of the Twelve Dancing Princesses until I read Jessica Day George’s version, Princess of the Midnight Ball. I fell in love with JDG’s book and I’m now eagerly awaiting this new retelling. I’m curious to see how Heather Dixon will put her own spin on the tale. Plus, gimme the pretty dress!

I'm going to read this for a few of my challenges:

The Thirteenth Princess by Diane Zahler
Release Date: September 9, 2009
Publisher: HarperCollins
Pages: 208

From Goodreads:

Zita is not an ordinary servant girl—she's the thirteenth daughter of a king who wanted only sons. When she was born, Zita's father banished her to the servants' quarters to work in the kitchens, where she can only communicate with her royal sisters in secret.
Then, after Zita's twelfth birthday, the princesses all fall mysteriously ill. The only clue is their strangely worn and tattered shoes. With the help of her friends—Breckin the stable boy, Babette the witch, and Milek the soldier—Zita follows her bewitched sisters into a magical world of endless dancing and dreams. But something more sinister is afoot—and unless Zita and her friends can break the curse, the twelve princesses will surely dance to their deaths.

A classic fairy tale with a bold twist, The Thirteenth Princess tells the unforgettable story of a magical castle, true love, spellbound princesses—and the young girl determined to save them all.

If I can’t wait for Entwined, I can always get my Twelve Dancing Princesses fix with this older version. I like the sound of Zita already. She reminds me of those plucky MG characters I love so much. I’m expecting a lighter story here, maybe even something that will make me say words like “delightful” and “charming.” Has anyone read this book? How did you like it? As a fairy tale retelling, does it have enough new and classic elements? I love the classic feel of this cover, which is actually very beautiful the more I look at it.

This book will qualify for the following challenges:

  16. *hides*
I don't know the 12 princesses fairy tale.
    *unhides*
Who said that? Whoever it is, he or she is clearly not well informed and should be ashamed of his- or herself.

In all seriousness, these look really good. I did gulp a bit at 480 PAGES. Sheesh. This one will have to wait for summer.

  21. The Thirteenth Princess is cute! Obviously not 100% accurate since a thirteenth princess is added, but it's a really nice version.
So far, the Jessica Day George verison is my favorite. I am so, so excited for Entwined. You have no idea just how much. I even have it preordered. *Squirms impatiently*

The Twelve Dancing Princesses has always been one of my absolute favorite fairytales!

  22. By far, the absolute best twelve dancing princesses story is Juliet Marillier's Wildwood Dancing. It tells basically the same story, but with fewer sisters. Have I tried to get you to read this before? Because I think you'd love it.

  25. OMG SMALL!!!!!!!

I have been trying to remember the name of this fairy tale for years!!!!!!!! When I would describe it to people they wouldn't know what I was talking about. I would scream right now if it weren't 11pm. Thanks so much for inadvertently making my entire week! I'd like to read these books also!
