Artist Spotlight: Glen Hanson
Glen Hanson has numerous covers to his credit and from all genres, but I know him through his absolutely darling covers for Joan Holub and Suzanne Williams' middle grade series Goddess Girls. Not only are these covers adorable, but they're all incredibly detailed and feature scenes, characters, and objects that are important in each of the stories. The bright colors he uses never fail to catch my eye. His artwork has made such an impression on me that I actually imagine the characters and stories playing out in the same cartoon style as the covers. I could totally see this series being turned into a cartoon TV series with Glen Hanson's artistic style.

This cover review is posted as part of Simon & Schuster Month hosted by Cialina at Muggle-Born.net! The Goddess Girls series is published by the Simon & Schuster imprint Aladdin.
Yes, I absolutely love these covers too. They are so bright and eye-catching! The perfect MG book targeted to girls. I absolutely could not tell you which one was my favourite. Instead, I like them all, taken as a set.
ReplyDeleteI love these covers! I like Artemis the Brave I think because of the night time colors. And Artemis is so beautiful! But really I love them all. When I was little I would have devoured these!
ReplyDeleteHeather
The artwork on these covers are awesome. While they aren't necessary books that I would read, I can still appreciate the pretty covers. My favourite would be Athena the Wise :)
ReplyDeleteSuch cute covers! This definitely looks like a fun series for younger readers. :)
ReplyDeleteOoh my favorite is Aphrodite the Diva! I won Artemis the Brave in a giveaway and am in love with these covers!
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm crazy about these covers!
ReplyDeleteI love how true to the books the are - like you can tell they were made with love and that the artist actually read the books.
And I agree, I could see this turn into a cartoon series with that kind of art.
:D
These are so cute!! Kinda reminds me of the Disney Hercules characters shrunk down lol I should point these out to my sister
ReplyDeleteAylee, I have to agree. I couldn’t pick a favorite either :)
ReplyDeleteHeather, Artemis is adorable, but then so are the others. The night colors are so vibrant even though they’re darker.
Nic, I love the Athena the Wise cover. It’s so bold and cute with so much action.
Leanna, They’re really cute. Perfect for MG or younger girls.
Lah, I like that one too! I also won Artemis the Brave :) Did you win the puppy, too? I didn’t, but he’s so cute. The story is adorable too.
Alex, Yes! I love that about these covers. I like looking at them and guessing how the different features will appear or looking at them after I’ve read it and picking out all of the little details. I love it when cover artists put so much effort into accurately portraying the book.
Laura, Yes, they do remind me of Disney’s Hercules! Definitely show your sister. They’re such cute, heartwarming stories.
I think the Artemis one is my favorite. I admire artists who do non-photography covers. It shows their skill more.
ReplyDeleteI'll be honest and say that cartoon covers are so not my thing, but I think these are cute as artwork, alone. I love the Artemis cover :)
ReplyDeletethese covers are just so adorable! how i wish i have a daughter so i can give all these to her! i love them all!
ReplyDeletehere's mine: http://bookcomfort.blogspot.com/2011/06/cover-crazy-monday-12.html
I agree! His artwork is really cute! I could ABSOLUTELY see it as an animated series. (Nick, CN, Disney? Is someone reading this?)
ReplyDeleteI love the artwork. My favourites are Athena the Brain (because I love Athena and it really shows off personality) and Aphrodite the Beauty because she reminds me of a Barbie for some reason.
ReplyDeleteI adore these covers! My daughters are still too young for this series, but I plan to introduce them when they’re older. It will be a great series to read together.
ReplyDeleteFor some reason, one I can't quite put my finger one, I'm not really feeling a strong attraction to these covers. Maybe its because the girls remind me of cartoon characters? It might also be the oval shape of their faces and big eyes - they remind me a bit of alien beings (I know very weird huh?).
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry, I know I'm going against the grain here, but figured you'd appreciate my honesty.
These are fantastic, eye-catching covers-I think my favorites are Aphrodite's because I love her ginormous hair and pretty dresses. I agree that they would make a great cartoon series; the style is very distinctive and could be fun to see on TV.
ReplyDeleteAlison, I love photography covers, but I do have a soft spot for illustrated covers. There’s usually so much more to look at.
ReplyDeleteMelissa, I think they’re definitely for a certain age, that’s for sure. I don’t think I’d like a cartoon cover for a YA book.
Yas, Me too!
A Backwards Story, Seriously, those tv stations should take note! I think it would be a hit. Something along the lines of Monster High.
A Canadian Girl, Aphrodite does look like Barbie :P Athena looks so cute on that cover.
Christie, I think it would be adorable to read together. There are so many sweet messages and things to discuss.
Gina, Haha, I can see the alien thing. Don’t ever worry about apologizing for having your own opinion here :) I do always appreciate (and count on!) your honesty.
Bookworm1858, I think I’d even be curious to watch an episode if they made it a tv show. :P I can just see the product line growing now!
These covers are so cute! Love 'em.
