Missing Comments

I decided to delete the new commenting system I had installed. I didn't like a bunch of things about it, most notably that it removed your avatars, looked jumbled, and was starting to do some really wonky things. I did like the feature where we could reply directly to posts, but the bad outweighed the good.

Unfortunately, in the process of removing intense debate, I also lost all of your comments. I thought that might happen, so I copied all of your comments into a Word document. Is that terribly silly? I'm sure there's some super easy "Import All Comments" feature, but I'm not tech savvy enough to have figured that one out. So I did it a long way, but hopefully this will work.

I'm going to comment all of your comments back onto the appropriate posts. This way I won't lose your words (which mean a lot to me) and you won't lose all of the links you took the time to leave here.

Well, you live and learn!

  1. Too bad it didn't work out. I, too, wish blogger had some sort of system for replying directly back to someone.
    btw, do you have a goodreads account?

  2. Not very technical myself, I'm also always finding myself saying whoops (or words to that effect)having managed to erase something or other so know just how you feel.

  3. I do Aylee. It's brand new so I don't have much set up. Here's the link.

    Hi Petty Witter, thanks for your comment. I feel a lot better now that I'm at least in good company. :)

  4. Well here is to increasing your blog comments!
    ;)

    Seriously though, me= super techincally challenged and I would be lost if that situation were to have occurred to me. I feel for you!

  5. Thank you, I do love them :)

    At least it looks like it's all worked out well enough in the end. Nothing lost but time.

  6. Oh man, that sucks! I would hate if I lost all my comments too, sometimes when I'm having a bad day, it's really nice to check my blog and have some fun comments waiting. I would have done the same thing to try to keep the comments, they're part of what makes blogging so fun!

  7. They really are. Before I really knew much about blogging I thought it was pretty much the blogger writes and that's it. I didn't have a clue about comments and understood even less about the interaction between the blogger and the people who comment.

    At this point, even though I really just started, if I stopped blogging or if one of you guys stopped blogging I'd really miss you. :)

  8. Ahhh I had this problem because it told me to turn off all comments to install Intense Debate. Not only did ID not install, but the comments were gone. When I went back to my settings and re-checked the box to show comments, they all returned :)

  9. Ah, at least I'm not alone with intense debate issues. They're a good idea in theory, but I think they still have some bugs to work out. I'm glad to hear all your comments came back!

  10. I'm sorry it didn't work out for you. It would be great if they managed to combine both ways, making it easier to directly respond. Especially when you have a backlog of comments to reply to, it becomes a lot to do in one comment. I love re reading comments, it makes me smile when I'm having a crappy day.

  11. Hello, I've just stumbled upon your blog. Just from reading this post alone, I think you sound like a very attentive blogger. I'll be back!

  12. I'm not sad to see the comment system go, I wasn't a big fan of it. I like this old way much better. BUT... what a bummer you lost all of your comments. That's not good. I feel badly for your predicament.

  13. Alice, wouldn't it be great? I'd try to make something myself if I knew how, but I haven't got a clue. It was also nice because you could subscribe to direct replies to your comment. I'll keep searching and see if there's another option.

    Hi Chutzpah, thanks for stopping by and following! You're so kind. :)

    Gina, yeah, it was a bummer, but I thought it might happen. They're all back now (though at a quick glance it looks like I was having a lot of fun talking to myself!)

    Thank you for your feedback too about the comment system. I'm very new to the blog world and I'm still working on getting my "blogging legs" so to speak, so I really do welcome any feedback. The people who comment are in a lot of ways the lifeblood of a blog, so your input is very important to me. After all, this blog is as much for all of you as it is for me.

  14. That sucks! When I first started blogging I thought Intense Debate looked very cool and I loved the fact that it allowed individual replies, but I also heard a lot of bad things about it, and because I'm not very tech savvy I decided against it. I'm sorry it didn't work out for you!

  15. Thanks Leanna. :) I should have done my homework a little more, but at least it only affected a few posts.

  16. LOL I would do but I can't even find out how to remove the borders around my pictures. HTML gives me a headache. It looks like it has really good elements. I don't usually subscribe to comments because I get a flood of unrelated ones that don't concern me. It would be very handy just to be able to subscribe to your own.

  17. Heh, yeah if anything is headache inducing it certainly is HTML! Setting up my blog was pretty much bang my head against a wall for a few days and then eureka! Then back to banging my head for a while. Does this help:

    For changing borders go into your "design" panel and then click on "Edit HTML" then scroll down until you're in the parts where they're neater looking paragraph sections. Find the section titled "Main" or something like that (body?)Then find something that looks like this:

    .post img {
    margin: 5px;
    padding: 5px;
    background: ;
    border: 0px solid #ffcccc;

    Where is says Border, set it to 0px (instead of whatever number you have there) and that should remove your borders on your pictures.

    Hope that helps. :)

It's all about friendly conversation here at Small Review :) I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Be sure to check back again because I do make every effort to reply to your comments here.

Because I am absolutely terrible about following through with blog awards, I can't in good conscience accept any more. Thank you very much for thinking of me though!
