What's Your Status? Is a meme created by Zakiya from Butterfly Feet Walking on Life where we recap our reading week. Feel free to visit her site and link up your own What's Your Status Posts. Here's how my week went:

Did Not Finish:

Rosebush by Michele Jaffe

The mystery never really grabbed me. At 146 pages, I didn't think enough clues were given to draw me into the mystery and I never connected with any of the characters. The main character wasn't particularly likable, but she wasn't someone I hated either. She was kind of just there. Her boyfriend was someone I truly despised. All of the other characters were like the main character: nothing great but nothing terrible. I know as the story goes on each character is supposed to be revealed as having some kind of motive for trying to kill the main character, but I guess that happens later because outside of the boyfriend, none seemed to have any motive to me. I put the book down because I realized that I didn't care about any of the characters. I didn't care if any of them died or if any of them was the killer.

I'm considering including only Goodreads links and removing the links to the author's page and the Amazon page. It's a lot of work adding all those links, and they can all be found through Goodreads anyway. Does anyone mind? If enough people mind then I won't change it.

I've also been considering using the Goodreads/product description instead of writing my own summary. I'll still write my own summary if I think the blurb gives away too much information or is misleading. Any thoughts on this?

  1. That's funny, because I was just thinking I need to add links to the author's page and social media sites. Heh. I don't mind if you don't have them, nor do I mind if you don't write your own summary. Whatever makes life easier or blogging more fun is a-okay with me. :)

  2. Oh that sucks you didn't like Rosebush. I am so glad I didn't rush out and buy it.

I think just keeping the Goodreads link is enough. And using their blurb is what I do most of the time. But either way I don't mind whatever works best for you!

  3. Too bad Rosebush didn't work for you. I'm in the middle of Vintage Veronica right now and considering dropping it. Have you heard of it? It's always disappointing when a book just doesn't capture you.

  4. Goodreads works pretty good! Most ppl use it anyway!

Now, back to check ur new review!

  5. I started off using Amazon links as well as Goodreads, but found I preferred when I clicked on someone elses link for it to go to Goodreads so I changed the way I post to match this. I think if someone wants to buy the book then they most likely already know how to navigate Amazon and can find it themselves lol.

  6. I have not read Rosebush but I will still clear from it. Thanks for the review. Happy Friday!!

  7. Thank you everyone for your feedback! So far, it looks like I’m going to remove those extra links and use a Goodreads blurb. Just what I wanted to hear :)

    Logan, Thank you :)

Nic, I saw a glowing review for Rosebush, so I know some people do like it (actually, I should add that review to mine…) I just really wasn’t feeling it. Ugh, and that boyfriend was awful (you’re not supposed to like him).

Alison, I have heard of Vintage Veronica, but I haven’t read it because….ah, I don’t like the cover. Good to hear I may be making a good call on it! You’re right, I am always very disappointed when I don’t enjoy a book.

    Yiota, Thanks for your feedback!

The Slowest Bookworm, Very true :) Before I joined Goodreads I had Amazon bookmarks of all the books I wanted to read. Now that I use Goodreads it’s so much more organized.

Savannah, I remember (correctly?) you enjoyed Here Lies Bridget, so you might like Rosebush. I think it’s supposed to be a similar idea (though I never got to any redemption or learning parts)

  8. I have to say...my favorite post this week, by far, was the naughty old grouch! :-) ...Gotta love librarian stereotypes.

  9. If I'm that interested, I'll do a search for the author. I rarely click on links from someone's post. Others might feel differently, but I'd say it's OK to eliminate those links.

  10. I try to link to the author's page. If they don't have one (which is rare) I'll link to the publisher.

I try not to go too overboard -- I've been leaning on Goodreads more and more this year. When I first joined, it was only because I had friends who nagged me into it and I thought, "Oh jeez, just what I need, another site to keep up with." (I thought the same thing when I first joined Twitter by the way, and now I completely rely on it!)

But now, I'm finding that organizing my "to be read" list is easier and more visually dynamic on Goodreads -- I used to just keep a Google spreadsheet.

I have a love/hate with Amazon. I wouldn't post their link unless you're getting paid!

  12. Agreed on the "Using Goodreads" summary. PS: Your recaps are so awesome. I would like to do this on my blog, or at least a "What's your status"

  13. Jessica, I'm so glad you liked it! As annoying as stereotypes can be, you can really have a lot of fun with them :)

Annette, Thank you for your feedback!

Madigan, Thank you for all your feedback. I felt the same way about Goodreads at first, but now I love them.

Carrie, Thank you for following! I'm really glad you stopped by and commented. I stumbled on your vintage site while I was at work. I really liked it, but I couldn't follow at work and then I lost the link. Now I have it again!

Lazy Girl, Thanks for your feedback. Please feel free to do a recap/What's Your Status. WYS is a meme with a linky list (on Saturdays, I think) and the recap part is by no means my original idea. :)

  16. I say you should do whatever you feel will save you time. More time not adding these details could mean more time reading and relaxing :)

It's all about friendly conversation here at Small Review :) I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Be sure to check back again because I do make every effort to reply to your comments here.

Because I am absolutely terrible about following through with blog awards, I can't in good conscience accept any more. Thank you very much for thinking of me though!
